Itinerary:
This trip is four days, 3 nights, arriving Monday June 8 and departing June 11, 2026. Hikes will be easy to moderate. I will be asking for coordinators to lead in-town hikes. Hikes will be posted for each day as the time gets closer to the trip. There will be out of town hikes for June 9 and 10, possibly also for June 8, led by myself and a member of our Waskahegan Trail Association hiking club. Possibilities for these hikes include Elk Island National Park, Miquelon Provincial Park, and Ministik Bird Sanctuary. There are also trails on privately owned lands of geographical interest that the Waskahegan Trail Association has permission to use and maintain, such as along the Battle River, Pipestone/Bigstone Creeks (site of Ft. Ethier), Coal Lake (south end of the Gwynne Channel). In town hikes can be offered most days. For people interested in a break from hiking, there is a well-developed shared trail system in the river valley running from west Edmonton all the way to Fort Saskatchewan which is excellent for biking. For kayakers/canoeists, you can paddle from west Edmonton to east Edmonton on the North Saskatchewan. If you wish to be a tourist for the day, there is the Edmonton Art Gallery, the Provincial Museum, Muttart Conservatory, the Devon Botanical Gardens and the shops of West Edmonton Mall and along Whyte Avenue. In the evening, Edmonton has an active theatre scene. There’s also the Happy Beer Street Ale Trail on 99 street south of Whyte Avenue with seven craft breweries, all within walking distance of each other, should you wish to partake (albertaaletrail.ca) For a list of possible hikes and independent activities, please email: helenwhitson@gmail.com
Recommended Items to Bring:
Trekking/sturdy runners for Edmonton hikes. Hiking boots for out of town hikes.
