WORKSHOP PLANNED FOR 2008)
Being Saint Patrick’s Day didn’t keep 41 keen and eager CWH
members from attending the Hikers’ Workshop at
Parkhill-Stanley Park Community Centre on March 17. This
extraordinarily informative session covered a wide range of
topics and the day flew by as long time member Gord McLure
tested our knowledge on club guidelines (which most of us
failed unfortunately) and backcountry specialist, Dave Watt
provided an excellent presentation.
Workshop topics included:
-

As a professional member of the American
Mountain Guides Association, an associate with the
Wilderness Medical Society and a Registered Paramedic Dave
provided a “real life” aspect in his approach to being
prepared, group management and coping with incidents. Dave
and his company, Rocky Mountain Adventure Medicine,
also provide a wide range of “Backcountry” First Aid
training sessions that get right to the point and enable
participants to be more confident and comfortable in their
ability to hike in our Mountain parks.
Those Calgary Weekend Hikers that did not
attend this workshop missed out not only on a great lunch
organized by Janet McMaster but also on a truly informative
session. Thanks to Janet for all of her work and to Betty
Alliston for her assistance. Thanks also to Gord McLure for
always being able to keep us on the “fun” side.
If
you are interested in joining Dave and his staff at
Rocky Mountain Adventure Medicine on one of their
courses you can contact them at
rmam@adventuremed.ca or check out their website at:
www.adventuremed.ca
Proper training
and knowledge will help you become a better hiker, enable
you to contribute more to the group and expand the enjoyment
of your hiking experience.
Incident management guidelines and report form are available
by going to the “MEMBERS’ CORNER” or
by
clicking on
“Incident Management Guidelines”.
