Write Up:
The Bow Hut hike offered spectacular scenery from start to finish and a bit of a challenge, and after months of smoky haze we were able to breathe clean air and see deep blue sky. Starting along Bow Lake we observed some handsome slender birds pecking at the surface of the water. Above the lake the trail followed the lively infant Bow River. At 3.5 km mark we left the busy Bow Falls Trail and climbed over a huge boulder forming a natural bridge across the narrow, deep canyon. This required some thinking about where to put my feet and hands to pull myself off the ground. On the way back we just jumped down. After walking along the edge of the canyon we entered a side valley. Over a boulder field we went and up into some trees at the edge of another, bigger canyon. The canyon opened up into a wide scree basin where we rock hopped over glacial streams. The final push to the hut led through a break in the headwall up a slope of scree and dirt. All the while we were surrounded by high peaks adorned by glaciers. It took us four hours to get to the hut and three hours to get down, with one good rest stop both on the way up and down. We saw a marmot and a pika on the way down. Peter Minarik
