Weekend Hikers Photography Hike in Bow Valley Provincial Park led by Brian Dechene
Have you ever heard this from any of the intrepid Weekend Hikers? ” Everyone walks so fast that I don’t ever have time to stop and take a picture!” Today’s leisurely walk in the Bow Valley Provincial Park was a day of stopping to take pictures.
Sue & Gord McLean, Wilma Gambel, Eric Charlton, Anne Wilson, Maria Giero, Colleen Yeh & Barb Davis followed the lead of photographer Brian Dechene and took 3hours worth of pictures. It’s just as Brian said: “Take 100 pictures and hope for 10 great ones.”
The temperature was 32C, the light was hot and dappled by the forest, so light diffusers were the big lesson of the day.
They ranged from Maria Giero’s beige linen shirt draped over 2 hiking poles, to an ingenious one created by Anne Wilson, gardener extraordinaire. She brought 2 thin steel rods that are normally used as garden stakes and attached (with clothes pins) a length of semi-sheer material used for plant protection to the rods which were stuck into the ground. Voila! A super light weight and portable “diffuser”. Eric Charlton eschewed invention, went to Saneal, and bought a huge circular professional diffuser that folds into a circle a foot in circumference. A classic case of “Why reinvent the wheel?”.
Besides ingenuity, the group came prepared with a willingness to learn, to share ideas, and to enjoy the subject matter that nature presented. The best lesson learned was that good photography cannot be rushed and is an excellent way to actually stop and smell the flowers.
