Write Up:
From the Bow Summit we took a climber’s trail to the north gully and later to the open middle rib. When our progress was blocked by difficult cliffs we traversed around on a ledge to a corner and down climbed to a shallow dirt gully. We crossed the gully on poor footing to easier ground on the other side. This was the crux of the whole climb and it can be classified as a moderately difficult scrambling, although opinions varied among the participants on this point. We scrambled up wide scree ramps in between cliffs until we got above the cliff belt. Now we were faced with a very steep and exhausting climb on scree to the false summit. From the false summit we walked across a large plateau to the main summit that was crowned by huge cornices over its northern glacier. Everybody reached the summit at 3,174 m above sea level. We spent more that an hour on the summit, enjoying the views of the dry, grey front ranges to the east and the glaciated peaks in all other directions. There was another party on the mountain, which I nicknamed Fast Boys, but as it turned out some of them were ladies. We managed to get to the summit before the Fast Boys did. From the false summit we descended on scree, traversing above the cliff belt to a break in the cliffs on the far south side. We descended to the main gully and followed it down into forest near our cars. We celebrated our successful climb with beer and steak sandwich at Lake Louise. Thanks to everybody for coming on the trip. Peter Minarik
