Spionkop Creek/Spionkop Ridge We finally did it. Several of us had been wanting to summit Spionkop Ridge for a long time and it finally happened. We started at the Spionkop Creek trailhead. The first part part of the trail is 4km up a gravel, gas road. Not the most exciting part. However, things get better. The trail then winds up the valley between Loaf and Spionkop, crossing open meadows before it descends through the forest. From here, we decided to make it more challenging (no reason to stay on a defined trail) and bushwhack through the spruce to the col. Strong wind gusts made the ascent to the ridge even more challenging but we perservered. We lunched under the summit of Loaf Mountain enjoying the views of the high point of Spionkop Ridge and the 360 degree panorama. Unbelievable! The hike to the high point on Spionkop (not the true summit) will have to wait for next year. The total distance was 24km with 1126 elevation gain.
