Write Up:
We started the hike on the Pack trail under hot sun, traversing the slopes high above Powderface Creek. The climber’s trail up to White Buddha and the top of Vents Ridge was strenuous but not too long. We did not see any climbers but saw quite a few hikers coming and going, particularly young people. We enjoyed a long, relaxing lunch at the top, out of the wind , with good views to the ridges and snowy peaks to the west. As we descended the other side we met creek refugees, people who came down to Prairie Creek and were too frightened to cross it, so they were hiking up back to the ridge. The trail was good initially but deteriorated lower down. At this point I took a wrong turn onto a path going nowhere that ended on steep slopes above the creek, so we descended down off trail. Prairie Creek looked brown, deep, and fast flowing. We looked for a safe crossing for a while, first downstream and then upstream. Eventually Dean spotted a place where you could “see the bottom” on a relatively straight section of the creek with easy access to water on both banks. We crossed there and finished our hike on the pleasant and relaxing Prairie Creek trail. Peter Minarik
