Write Up:
On the drive in, Vern was telling a story from his work as an immigration officer at the Calgary airport when suddenly a cinnamon-coloured bear, a handsome beast, darted out of a ditch and ran across the road. Vern slammed the breaks just in time to avoid hitting the bear. Well, on the trail itself we saw babies, dogs on leash that were eager to meet strangers but no bears. Yet the bears were never too far away as shown by a fresh bear scat just off the main trail. Not to worry, our group of 14 hikers were large enough to scare off any bear. Despite its size the group worked well together and the faster hikers were kind enough to let the slower hikers catch up. Since everybody was quite energetic, we made a short detour to some sandstone humps on the ridge. I and Fumi started to climb the cliffs of the higher bump and to my surprise just about everybody else followed and had a good time at that. The hike started by crossing the Sheep River on a new bridge over Tiger Jaw Falls. It led through forest with occasional glimpses of green meadows. The final section on a wide open ridge to the summit offered spectacular views of the valleys, hills, and peaks of the Sheep River. Peter Minarik
