The third time is the charm -- having had to cancel this hike twice before due to thunderstorms, I was wondering if we would ever get up here. In recent years during hiking season, a bus will take you up to the Sunshine Resort day lodge. This year, on Fridays through Sundays, they run the gondola and Standish quad chairlift (the bus runs on the other days). The advantage is that there are no reservations required -- and you can ride the chairlift down. It was a beautiful clear day -- our early 8 am start from Calgary got us there at 9:30. As the gondola and chairlift had done the grunt work of getting us to the Alpine, we had lots of time to meander, take pictures and enjoy the scenery, and stop on the rocky shore beside Larix Lake for lunch. Gord pointed out the rock where Barry Simpkins loved to take a nap. There were still some flowers in bloom and the top of the larch trees were just starting to turn. On the return, some opted to walk down to the gondola terminal while others opted for the return chair lift. All in all, a beautiful day!
