Five of us met at the Canadian Tire and piled up into Constantine’s Mazda, which helped us develop a good rapport. After meeting the other seven hikers at the trailhead, we started on the Prairie Creek Trail and enjoyed the ups and downs through aspen hillsides and over a rocky promontory. After about an hour we came to an unmarked junction in a meadow. Here I divided the group into a fast group and a slower group, with people self-selecting themselves. I stayed with the slower group and after warming up on the Prairie Creek trail our bodies were better prepared for the 600 m elevation gain that we needed to reach the summit. The trail was good and well-marked all the way to the summit, except in the initial meadow. It was pleasant hiking following a dry creek to a saddle and then up the semi-open forest of the West Ridge. Since the West Ridge is occasionally visited by grizzlies our slower group of four walked in a tight group. I joined a sub-group from the fast group for lunch at the summit, while some people had already decided to descend before our slower group reached the summit. Constantine took a group picture of the six of us at the summit. The bad weather was closing in, so Constantine and I ran down the normal route, which was dusty and very crowded. We completed the loop in four hours, with Jacinta close behind. The rest of the people coalesced into one group and came down later, except for two people who opted out of the group at the summit and had lunch by themselves. We met a few people on the Prarie Creek trail but none on the West Ridge route, while all the masses were goimg up and down the normal route.
